I love a good photo reference to plan my space. Once I find a worthy room online, I use the photo to personalize the scheme for my own home.
I’m currently faced with a bedroom project. I’ll be starting with a completely blank palette. But I’m in no rush. This project can drag on until I find the perfect components to suit the way I plan to use the room and the way I want to feel when I’m in it.
I spend a lot of time in bed with coffee. It’s the highlight of my every day and the moment I most look forward to. I start thinking about it the evening before. The thoughts persist through the night until I’m settled back in bed before the sun comes up with a piping hot cup on my nightstand (organic fair trade instant, if you must know).
Where was I? Beds. Considering my love for this daily coffee event, I will need a bed that fosters comfort, reassurance and relaxation. A shelter bed fits the bill. I lean towards winged and tufted beds because they provide the familarity of a favorite, well-worn wing back chair. A rounded headboard is more cradling than a straight one. I tend to steer clear of headboards that are too tall and look like they are climbing the wall because they come across as stiff and intimidating.
These are the contenders in no particular order, subject to change as the search evolves.
^This velvet bed is from Interior Define. Velvet creates an atmosphere that is, at once, chic and welcoming while the clean lines keep it simple. It is available in many colors but I love the celadon (even though it strays from my vision, darn it). It is a reasonable option at $2045.
^This is a lovely modern option by RHTeen although I don’t see any reason for it to be limited to teens. I sat in the Arhaus version of this bed which was equally indulgent but I opted for the RH bed simply because there are more color options. I love the very 2024 fluted wood but it comes with a hefty price tag weighing in at over $4000.
^This option is from KathyKuoHome. Comfort and style team up for a hotel-vibe that I love.
^Next up is the RH Baby & Child bed. Again, I see no reason why it can’t be used in adult bedrooms. The tufted headboard and padded wings would lull me right to sleep if it wasn’t for that coffee jolt. I adore the low profile and price point of $1600-ish for members.
^Velvets have an easy time slipping onto my leading list. It adds a touch of luxury and, in this case, is also understated and unpretentious. At $1399, it deserves recognition. From Castlery.
^With all the coffee drinking I do, I don’t trust myself to keep white white. But I do certainly love the lure of this bed that IS available in other colors. Might be hard to get up for work, though. Just love this bed from Arhaus. Starting at $1999 on sale. Wow.
^This impressive bed feels like a room in itself and the imposing price tag practically reflects a new home addition. If you are considering adding on a room or an extended resort stay, this bed is a high end alternative. $5545. Available at Wayfair.
It took endless online searching and multiple calendar flips to narrow it down to these beds. Honestly, I created this post to keep track of my favorite beds but it should be noted that after I weed out them out further, I’ll be on an estate sale hunt for some vintage burlwood dressers on casters to balance the modern scheme with romance and timelessness. It all ties back to estate sales.
I'm in contact with interior designer and consultant, Teresa Mongelli, for her feedback on my selections so check back for that as well as for any additions that may come up. I've scoured the internet and have probably seen every bed in the universe but I just may find others. I also welcome reader input. Let me know your bed of choice.
Coming soon will be my problematic living room post and de-china-closeted dining room furniture post.
